Specialist half-day training course in Perth

Information architecture and content structure

Learn how to structure information for websites where menus and pages are only part of how people find what they need.

Information architecture used to be thought of largely in terms of sitemaps, page hierarchies and navigation menus. Those things still matter, but people now also find information through search, filters, AI-generated answers and content that appears in more than one place.

Learn how to plan information architecture, navigation and content structures that work for people and for the technology behind them.

Who this course is for

This course is for people responsible for planning, structuring or improving websites and online services.

It’s particularly useful for communications and digital teams, website managers, content specialists, customer experience professionals and people working on website redevelopment or improvement projects. You might be developing a new information architecture, reviewing an existing website, planning a new CMS, improving search and navigation, or trying to make information work better across your website and online services. If that sounds like your work, this course is for you.

What you’ll learn

Explore a modern approach to information architecture that brings together customer needs, navigation, reusable content, search, connected systems and the growing role of AI in how people find and use information.

Rethink the traditional sitemap

Understand where hierarchy still matters, but also where a traditional page tree can limit the experience. Explore different ways of organising information around customer needs, tasks, topics and relationships.

Design navigation beyond the menu

Look at different navigation models and how menus, landing pages, contextual links, related information and other pathways can work together to help people move through the website.

Think beyond pages

Learn when information should live on a page and when it makes more sense as structured, reusable content that can be managed once and surfaced in multiple places through components or modules.

Structure content for search and AI

Understand how clear labels, content types, metadata, taxonomy, relationships and structure can help website search, external search and AI tools interpret information and surface it in the right context.

Connect information across systems

Consider information that lives outside the CMS in applications, forms, directories, mapping tools and other systems, and explore how integrations and shared data can create a more connected customer experience.

Make search part of the architecture

Look beyond the search box to consider search-led navigation, filters, indexes and ways of bringing together information from different content sources and platforms so people can find what they need without understanding where it is stored.

Your website is no longer just a collection of pages

Modern online experiences are increasingly made up of information, components, relationships and connections between systems.

A contact, location, project, event, service, alert or action might need to appear in several different places. Rather than recreating that information on every page, we can structure it once and design the experience so it appears wherever it is relevant.

The same thinking applies beyond the CMS. Useful information may live in another application or system altogether. The customer should not need to understand those organisational or technical boundaries to find what they need.

We’ll look at how navigation, reusable content, search, metadata, relationships and integrations can work together so information is easier to manage and more likely to appear in the right place at the right time.

Learn from real experience

I’m Michelle Kember-Imrie. For more than 25 years, I’ve helped organisations make complex information simpler for the people who need to find and use it.

I’ve planned information architectures, navigation models, content structures and reusable components for complex websites. That work means balancing customer needs, organisational requirements, CMS capabilities, search and connected systems.

I bring those lessons into the training room so you can see not only the principles, but how they work in practice.
