Specialist half-day training course in Perth
Planning a website redevelopment
Learn the roadmap I use to plan website redevelopment projects before design and development begin.
A website redevelopment is a significant investment. The decisions made before a designer or developer starts work have an enormous impact on what happens next. Miss that groundwork and problems tend to surface later, when they’re harder, slower and more expensive to solve.
Learn what needs to happen, in what order and who needs to be involved, so your project starts on solid ground.
Who this course is for
This course is for people responsible for planning, managing or contributing to a website redevelopment.
It’s particularly useful for project managers, communications and digital leads, customer experience professionals and anyone who has been asked to lead a redevelopment but wants a clearer picture of everything that needs to happen before, during and around the build.
It also works particularly well as training for an entire website project team. Getting everyone across the roadmap early creates a shared understanding of the work ahead, the decisions that need to be made and how the different workstreams fit together.
What you’ll learn
Work through the major stages of a website redevelopment and understand what needs to be discovered, decided, documented and prepared to give the project the strongest possible foundation.
Start with the right project foundations
Define the purpose of the redevelopment, establish the right project team and clarify scope, responsibilities, decision-making and the outcomes the project needs to achieve.
Understand where you are now
Learn what to review before making decisions about the new site, including existing websites, platforms, functionality, analytics, integrations, content challenges and known customer pain points.
Build the evidence base
Understand how analytics, customer journeys, surveys, stakeholder consultation, community research and other evidence can help you identify what people actually need from the future website.
Turn needs into requirements
Learn how to move from ideas and wish lists to clear functional, technical and operational requirements covering the CMS, functionality, integrations, accessibility, search, analytics, migration, training and more.
Prepare to choose a CMS and vendor
Learn how to turn your requirements into a clear brief, what to look for when assessing platforms and vendors, and how to avoid choosing a solution before you understand the problem.
Sequence the roadmap
See how discovery, requirements, procurement, information architecture, content, governance, accessibility, design, development, testing and migration fit together, why some workstreams need to start early, and where work can run in parallel to keep the project moving.
The build is only part of the project
A successful website redevelopment starts well before you choose a CMS or appoint a vendor.
One of the biggest traps is treating the website build as the project. In reality, much of the work that decides whether the project succeeds happens around it, and some of it needs to start long before the build does.
We’ll look at what needs to happen, when it needs to happen and which activities depend on one another. You’ll also see where work can run in parallel, so the project keeps moving without creating problems further down the track.
The aim is to give you a roadmap you can adapt to your own project, rather than having to work out the process as you go.
Learn from real experience
I’m Michelle Kember-Imrie. For more than 25 years, I’ve helped organisations plan and deliver website redevelopment projects.
I’ve helped organisations undertake customer and stakeholder research, define requirements, plan information architecture and content, prepare for procurement, work with vendors and navigate the many decisions that sit around a redevelopment.
This course brings those lessons together into a practical roadmap you can adapt to your own project.
More about MichelleWhat you’ll take away

Arrange in-house trainingMichelle was initially engaged by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River to assist with the research component of our Website Rebuild Project when it kicked off in May 2021. The objective of this scope of works was to inform opportunities to improve the sitemap structure and overall user experience prior to developing a new website, and also to inform the Functional and Technical Tender requirements for a new website developer and CMS, which Michelle wrote.
